The building code is the same across Alberta, but who issues your permits, what they ask for and how suites are treated change from one municipality to the next. St. Albert asks for two separate permits to finish a basement. Sherwood Park's permits come from Strathcona County, not the City of Edmonton. Beaumont's trade permits go through The Inspections Group.
Each area page covers the local permit steps, suite rules and programmes, with links to the official sources. To compare them side by side, read our guide to basement permits around Edmonton, which goes through them town by town.
